A musical mystery and meditation on mortality, 33 Variations explores motherhood, obsession, and the power of art through the parallel journeys of Katherine, a terminally ill musicologist, and Ludwig van Beethoven.
As Katherine seeks to understand why Beethoven devoted his failing health and near-total deafness to thirty-three variations on a mediocre waltz, the play weaves between present day and the early 1800s with wit, warmth, pathos, and music.
Collaborating with Maureen Cartlidge on the set, and long time collaborator Jennifer Willison as director.
